Private Residence, Box, Wiltshire

A large bespoke new family home cut into the hillside overlooking Bath and the surrounding countryside. This spectacular site on the slopes of the limestone and clay hills around Bath presents some challenges for founding a new structure. We specified a ground investigation to take full consideration of slope stability issues, allowing us to confidently respond to the local challenges.

The building is partially submerged into the hillside with large open plan spaces on the upper ground floor level taking full benefit of the available views.

Giraffe Engineering provided a full structural design service, adopting a cost-effective proprietary reinforced blockwork retaining wall solution which enabled the maximum amount of space to be captured within the new development. A network of steel beams within the upper levels allow the upper storey to cantilever in two directions out from the floor below, creating a striking profile to the building.
