Kintbury Eco Centre

The Kintbury Eco Centre is a new research base situated in a wild meadow close to woodland in Berkshire which is expected to open in late 2026 - Early 2027

It focuses on studying and enhancing local flora and fauna, particularly butterflies and moths, featuring education spaces for researchers and community groups.

Located on the footprint of a former agricultural barn, the project has a very strong environmental agenda, which is focused on minimising the carbon footprint of the development and enhancing local biodiversity. Giraffe Engineering produced a series of embodied carbon assessments to help inform the design process, with a lightweight timber frame superstructure to minimise weight, and recycled steel pile foundations adopted to significantly reduce the volume of concrete used on the project.

SuDS principles ensure that surface water runoff from the site is maintained at greenfield levels by incorporating swales, holding ponds and flow control devices to manage rainwater flow into the nearby watercourse.
